The Sutherland Astronomical Society Practical Astronomy Course (or SASPAC) is held annually at the Green Point Observatory and runs on Wednesday evenings for 8 weekly sessions. Recommended for adults, teens and gifted sub-teens who wish to expand their knowledge of the cosmos. The next SASPAC commences on Wednesday 3rd September 2008. Session dates for 2008 are September 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, followed by a 2 week break for the school holidays (October 1st & 8th). The remaining sessions are scheduled for October 15th, 22nd, 29th and November 5th. Each session starts at 7:30pm and continues for approximately 2 hours (registration on Week 1 begins 30 minutes earlier at 7pm). The course will cover the following programme (subject to change): Introduction to Practical Astronomy | Constellations, Catalogues & Atlases | The Inner Solar System | Anatomy of Stars | The Outer Solar System | Deep Sky Observing | Telescopes and Optics | Cosmology |
Participants are also invited to attend a number of SASI dark sky observing sessions during the course. The cost of the course is $130 (inclusive of GST) which includes full attendance at lectures, weekly night sky viewing (weather permitting), supper, a copy of the excellent 480-page book "Practical Skywatching" and certificate on completion of the course.
