JUNIOR SECTION RECOMMENCING

THURSDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2008

SUTHERLAND ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY INC.

Following interest from a number of members with primary school aged children interested in learning more about astronomy, the third generation of the SASI Junior Section was commenced in July 2004.

Since then, the Sutherland Astronomical Society Junior Section has met at the Green Point Observatory on the 3rd Thursday of the month from February to November inclusive.

Due to construction work at the Observatory during most of 2007 and the difficulty in finding a suitable alternative venue, Junior Section meetings were suspended during the construction works but are now scheduled to recommence Thursday the 21st of February. This has allowed the Committee to revisit the Junior Section and appoint a Junior Section Sub-Committee to oversee the conduct and curriculum of the Junior Section.

the kids have learnt about Constellations, light and telescopes, the Moon, Sun, planets, stars and deep sky objects. The juniors often make models and conduct experiments, and extensive use of computer simulation software is made.

Commencing 2008, the following will apply to the Junior Section:

The minimum age for Junior Section will be 8 years of age.

The “primary age” juniors (8-13) will meet from 6:30pm to 8pm on the 3rd Thursday of each month February-November at the Green Point Observatory.

The “teen age” juniors (14-18) will meet from 8pm – 9:30pm on the 3rd Thursday of each month February-November at the Green Point Observatory.

Parents/Guardians are to remain with and supervise all “primary age” juniors.

All juniors must be either Junior Members of the Society or the children of Family members of the Society.

Junior Membership of the Society costs $20 per annum (due on 1st April each year) and there is no joining fee for junior members.

Children/Parents are invited to attend two (2) Junior Section meetings as visitors (without payment) to evaluate if this is suitable for their children, after which they should join the Society if they wish to remain a member.

There will be night viewing on Junior Section nights if weather permits and three dark sky Junior Nights on Saturday nights at Waterfall Oval.

Some of the juniors already have their own telescopes, and hopefully will be able to join the seniors at Waterfall and at the public open nights.

We are always looking for seniors who are willing to help the kids on the 3rd Thursday nights, so if you have some free time, why not volunteer? We are also keen for more interested kids to join our ever growing group.
