Membership

Membership of the Sutherland Astronomical Society is open to all people with an astronomical interest or who wish to interact with or observe with other amateur astronomers. While most of our members live in the southern suburbs of Sydney, many members live in other parts of Sydney, NSW and even interstate.

We pride ourselves on being known as the "Friendly Society" and new members are made most welcome. Why not visit us one Thursday evening and find out for yourself!

Membership is available in several categories:

FULL

Ordinary Membership to which most of our members belong. It entitles the member to full attendance at meeting and observing sessions, and voting on any resolution proposed. A full member is entitled to run for and vote in Committee elections, receive a PDF copy of the journal, use of  the library, use of astronomical facilities subject to accreditation and an observatory key subject to accreditation, committee approval and qualifying period. 

FAMILY

Allows one adult member of the family the rights of a FULL member and that persons' partner and under 18 dependants (living with them) the rights of ASSOCIATE members. 

ASSOCIATE

Allows full attendance at meeting and observing sessions and PDF copy of the journal. There are no voting rights for this level of membership. 

RETIREE / CONCESSION

This category is only open to persons who have retired from the workforce having reached 55 years of age; or are in receipt of an Australian pension/superannuation (at any age). Allows the person the rights of a FULL member but at a reduced subscription.

STUDENT

This category is only open to Full Time students of a recognised school, college or university between the ages of 18 and 25 years. Allows the person the rights of a FULL member but at a reduced subscription.

JUNIOR

This category is only open to Full Time students of a recognised school, college or university under the age of 18 years. Allows the person the rights of a FULL member but at a reduced subscription, with the exception that Junior members are not entitled to run for or vote in Committee elections.

MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS

Current membership subscriptions are as follows (quoted in Australian Dollars).  Note that no new applications for a printed journal are being accepted, and the annual fee for those currently receiving a printed journal will increase in 2019.

PAYMENT OF FEES 

May be made in person at the Observatory by cash or EFTPOS or by EFT to BSB 032059 A/C 883748. If using EFT please use your name as reference and attach copy of transmission receipt.

If you wish to join, please complete an application form and drop it into the observatory on any Thursday night, or return it along with your remittance for one years' subscription to:

Note that all membership applications require the nomination of a registered member, and if you are not known to the committee you may be invited to attend the observatory to meet a committee member prior to application approval.
