CATEGORIES:Guest Speaker Night
CREATED:20240412T160333
SUMMARY:Guest Speaker - Dr Stefania Barsanti - University of Sydney
LOCATION:of Event: Green Point Observatory
DESCRIPTION:<h2>The spinning of galaxies in the web of our Universe</h2><p>In our Unive
rse, the majority of galaxies spin, but where is their angular momentum com
ing from? In this talk, I will discuss the complex large-scale structure of
our Universe and how galaxies spin in this cosmic web. Galaxies with diffe
rent shapes are found to spin in different ways within the large-scale cosm
ic structure, exposing understandings on how galaxies acquire their angular
momentum. I will present the latest studies on the topic that use data fro
m the Anglo-Australian Telescope in NSW, comparing them with works done wit
h computer simulations, revealing insights on the various formation pathway
 s of different kind of galaxies.</p><h2><img src="images/articles/Stefania_
 Barsanti.jpg" alt="Stefania Barsanti photo" width="258" height="450" style=
 "margin-right: 10px; float: left;" /></h2><h2>Dr. Stefania Barsanti</h2><p>
Stefania is a Messel Research Fellow at the University of Sydney. From 2021
to 2024 she was an ASTRO 3D research fellow at the Australian National Uni
versity. She received her PhD from Macquarie University in 2021. Before Aus
tralia, she studied physics and astronomy in Italy.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Curi
ous about what a Hector observing night looks like on the 4m Anglo-Australi
 an Telescope?<br />Check out this short-movie: <a href="https://www.youtube
