Meeting of Two Cultures Ceremony
Tuesday 29 April 2025, 10:00am - 11:00am
Hits : 11

Every year, on the anniversary of Cook’s landing at Kurnell (29/4/1770), a ceremony organised by Sutherland Council is held at Kurnell to mark the occasion.

On the 29 April this year SASI has been asked to contribute, via a presentation, on the relevance of Astronomy to Cooks First Pacific Voyage (1768-1771). This year marks the 255th anniversary of Cook’s landing at Kurnell. Therefore, for the first time (to my knowledge), SASI is flying the flag at this yearly anniversary event.

Any member and their parties are welcome to attend this event which will be held near the Discovery Centre/Meeting Place, Kurnell, beginning at 10am sharp.

SASI was originally named the James Cook Astronomers Club, when originally formed in 1961. This was changed to the James Cook Astronomical Society before finally changing to the Sutherland Astronomical Society in 1978.
